How to host a healthy birthday party for your child

Have you a child’s birthday party coming up?

And you’re wondering how to make it a little healthier? Are you wondering what food to serve to have a healthy birthday party for your child?

While I do believe there needs to be cake at a birthday party, there are ways to include other, healthier foods too! As a mum of 3, I’ve hosted many birthday parties over the years and have lots of ideas on how to keep the party food a little bit healthier!.

Our kids are surrounded by junk food all the time. In the supermarket, in the garage forecourt, takeaways, marketing. This doesn’t mean

10 ways to have a healthier birthday party for your child

  1. serve large platter of fruits and veggies. Get creative and search for ideas on pinterest or instagram. I love the Kids Food Edit or Food Bites - both of whom have tons of great ideas for healthy and fun fruit and veg platters for kids parties

  2. serve your fruit and veg platters with protein packed dips like hummus for the veggies or a greek yoghurt dip for the fruit

  3. make fun fruit and veggies skewers - get the kids to help.

  4. serve popcorn instead of crisps (if the kids are old enough obviously!). Make the popcorn an interactive experience by popping your own (the kids will love hearing and watching the popcorn pop!). Or upgrade your popcorn by colouring it - like this pink popcorn we made for a Barbie movie night!

  5. make muffins with a healthier twist like these beetroot and chocolate brownies or apple and carrot muffins

  6. instead of fizzy drinks, try adding sparkling water to your favourite cordial and serving with some frozen fruit

  7. homemade chicken nuggets are always popular at birthday parties and will fill them up!

  8. instead of loads of sweets, try making powerballs and dipping them in chocolate. We love these ones here for parties.

  9. instead of sending home party bags of sweets with the party goers, send home leftovers like the muffins or birthday cake. Or make extra muffins to send home with them. How about fun party bags full of pencils, notebooks and colouring pages.

Over the years, we’ve done potted plants, stationery sets and leftovers as party bags as well as chocolate bark..

  10. host a healthy birthday party cookalong with me! I can come and make a simple recipe with your kids or have a fun food workshop.with them.

  11. get your kids involved in helping make the food. They’ll be so proud showing off their creations to their friends and family!
