Food education cooking classes in your school

How we organise food education and simple cooking classes in your school.

We have taught thousands of children simple food education and cooking classes in preschools and primary schools across Ireland.

Many teachers and principals ask us : how does it work? We don’t have a school kitchen so it won’t work in our school?

And we reply : it’s no problem! We don’t need a school kitchen. We just need a space, some tables and some children!

Here’s how it all works.

In advance of cooking and food education classes in your preschool or school:

  • We decide a date that suits

  • We agree on a simple recipe (see below).

  • We send out a consent form and recipe sheet in advance to you to share with parents.

  • You alert us to any allergies so we can allow for this (eg. gluten free bread etc)

On the day of the food education and simple cooking classes in your school:

  • We arrive before school starts and set up in our designated space

  • We supply all food and equipment including safe knives and peelers

  • The workshop is a mixture of sensory food education and simple cooking

  • All children get to make their own version of the recipe.

  • The focus is always on whole foods with fruits and veggies playing a star role

  • We can teach children of all age groups from jnr. infants - 6th class

  • We can take full class sizes up to 30 in each workshop (with a teacher present)

  • Classes last approx 35/40 mins with 10 mins in between each to tidy up and reset working around your breaks.

  • Parents are welcome to attend and watch the class

  • There may be lots of FUN had! We ask lots of questions and encourage a little bit of shouting!

Sample recipes that work well in a school setting:

  • tomato bruschetta

  • apple donuts

  • carrot cake power balls

We never use nuts in our recipes.

What teachers and principals have to say:

Thank you so much for your visit. The children really enjoyed the hands on experience and adored the protein balls that were made. The sessions were so well suited to all age groups and everyone really enjoyed the experience! Principal, Limerick

Thanks for visiting us Deirdre. Your classes were a really positive experience for our school. The children really enjoyed it and have even used the recipes again at home. We particularly liked the multi-sensory approach and the use of healthy ingredients that we're accessible to the children. 4th class Teacher, Mullingar

Our class had a great time with the Cool Food School. Deirdre was excellent with the class - the students were hanging on to every word she said. The lesson was highly interactive, the children were encouraged to share their experiences with healthy eating and most of all - the food was delicious! 5th class Teacher, Greystones

All we need from you is

  • a space for classes to take place (ideally a hall or based in a class)

  • tables for the kids to sit or stand at

  • a table for our equipment and food

  • we may need access to electricity or water depending on the recipe we make

Deirdre Doyle
