How to make butter at home!

In honour of St. Brigid’s Day on the 1st of February, I decided to try making butter from scratch at home. St. Brigid is the patron saint of butter - according to legend, she once gave away all her family’s butter to some poor people.

Butter is really easy to make at home and kids will love making their own butter! You only need 1 ingredient and a couple of simple household bits that you should have hanging around.

The kids will love seeing how the cream turns thicker and slowly turns into butter. And it actually only takes minutes to turn your cream into butter.

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own butter

- double cream

- empty jar with lid

- marble

How to make your own butter

  • Pop your marble into your empty jar

  • fill about half the jar with cream - you’ll need to leave lots of space for shaking!

  • Add a pinch of salt if you want

  • Shake, shake, shake the cream. Let the kids take turns to do this. See the different stages below. It took about 45 seconds to get to the first stage and about 2 minutes to complete the butter

    Stage 1 Stage 2 Stage 3

This butter will keep about 3 weeks in the fridge.

And that’s the simple way to make your own butter at home with the kids!

Enjoy your homemade butter with bread like St. Brigid!
